Colton's girls basketball team beat the Dayton Pirates 43-29 on Saturday, Feb. 22, sending the Vikings on to round one of the state playoffs. They face first-ranked Vale on Friday, Feb. 28, in Vale.

“We played a pretty good game defensively,” Coach Kyle Gilstad said. “We came out to a big lead and hung on to it.”

The Vikings won all but one quarter, tying in the second, and held the Pirates to 23 percent shooting from the field.

Tavia Ball took home a double-double, with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

“It was probably her best game,” Gilstad said.

Mikaela Shelton also had a good game, taking 12 points, four rebounds and four steals. Jessica Parker landed only two points, but pulled down an impressive nine rebounds and seven assists. Kailee White had a good night at the free-throw line, taking eight of ten shots.

The Vikings will have their hands full in Vale, but Gilstad is incredibly happy to make the playoffs.

“[Vale] plays a lot like us, fast with full court pressure,” Gilstad said. “[But the game] is icing on the cake. No one expected us to go this far.”
