by: CORY MIMMS - The Indians warming up before their first preseason game. Molalla enters league play on Monday, April 7, at home versus North Marion. The Indians went 2-1 last week in the Yaquina Bay Baseball Classic. Molalla (now 2-3 overall) opened with a 5-4 win over North Bend on Monday, March 24.

North Bend matched Molalla in the second and third innings, but the Indians snagged a run in the fifth, which gave them a narrow lead. North Bend went scoreless in the last four innings, leaving the Indians with the one-point win.

Kurt Potter, Austin Alexander, and Aaron Alexander all picked up a run, but it was Devon Schaefer who was swinging the big stick. Schaefer went two for three, including a timely home run.

Pitching for Molalla were Nick Hopkins and Austin Alexander. Hopkins allowed four runs to score on 79 pitches in four innings. Alexander allowed zero runs to score on 42 pitches, while allowing five hits.

Later that day, Newport put a shellacking on Molalla, as they cruised to a 12-2 victory. Newport got up 3-0 in the second inning. Molalla got one run in the third and one in the fourth to put the score at 3-2. However, Newport leapt ahead in the last three innings, nabbing nine points.

Austin Alexander and Luke Ellis contributed two hits a piece, each going two for three, and it was Kurt Potter and Aaron Alexander who picked up the runs for Molalla.

Aaron Alexander continued to show a patient eye at the plate, walking twice and improving his On Base Percentage.

On some days you just don't have it, and while he pitched a solid game, Molalla's Keaton Franco just couldn't avoid the Newport bats.

The following day, Molalla had a decisive victory against Douglas, winning 7-4.

Hopkins picked up the win as he and Austin Alexander combined to go seven innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits. Molalla’s defense played well, only making one error to Douglas's four.

Molalla's Reed Aylett and Aaron Alexander each added two hits, and Aaron and his brother Austin Alexander each scored two runs. This proved to be a true team victory as contributions came all across the board.

Overall, Coach Todd Potter was happy with the boys’ performance. “[They] played well, and we are getting better each game,” he said.

This week, Molalla plays three games at home. They face Sweet Home on Wednesday, April 2, at 4:30, and then they play a doubleheader against Seaside on Saturday, April 5, with the first game beginning at noon.
