Country Christian went 3-2 in preseason and enters league play this week.

by: LACEY MCGRAW - Pitcher Jordan Syphard throws to first baseman Cooper Nofziger in the Cougars' opening game against Gervais. The Country Christian Cougars play their first league games this week. They are on the road on Monday, March 31, versus Waldport (2-1). They play St. Paul (1-2) at Country Christian on Wednesday, April 2, at 4:30 p.m.

The Cougars opened their season hot, winning three consecutive games. They first beat Gervais and then Colton in their opening week. Then, last week they played a doubleheader against Dufur/South Wasco County on Monday, March 24. The Cougars won the first game 6-4. However, Dufur got the better of them in the second game, which the Cougars lost 9-2.

“Dufur is a very good team,” Coach Garylee Syphard said. “I was very impressive with the way they hit the ball.”

The Cougars followed up their split doubleheader against Dufur with a tough 6-1 loss to the Grant Union Prospectors in nonleague play on Wednesday, March 26.

“We had a stinker against Grant Union,” Syphard said, adding that seven errors from the Cougars’ defense gave the Prospectors five of the six runs they got.

“That’s an aberration,” Syphard said. “We don’t throw the ball down like that. I’m glad to have that out of the way in nonleague play.”

Stepping into league play this week, Syphard said he’s “feeling about 75 percent confident.”

The Cougars preseason was very short, so the team still has a little “tinkering” to do, Syphard said. “We are looking fine. We’re playing good baseball … I think that we got seven of our nine positions pretty well cemented in for the moment. There are still a couple up for grabs.”
