TRACK: Molalla athletes shine during rainy Wilsonville Invitational

by: JIM BESEDA/MOLALLA PIONEER - Molalla freshman Desiirae DesRosiers ran a personal best of 17.78 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles at Saturday's Wilsonville Invitational track and field meet at Wilsonville High School. Molalla sophomore hurdler Drew Vandenbroeder has his eye on a possible berth in next month’s OSAA Class 4A state track and field championships in Eugene.

Vandenbroeder appeared headed in the right direction when he placed fourth in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles at Saturday’s Wilsonville Invitational at Wilsonville High School.

Running in between rain showers, Vandenbroeder finished the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.4 seconds, crossing the line behind a pair of Class 6A athletes from Aloha and West Linn and a 5A athlete from St. Helens.

“That felt pretty good,” Vandenbroeder said. “I’ve been working on getting a better lean to keep my speed, because I’ve been struggling with that at the end of the race. I felt like that was better than it has been lately.”

Vandenbroeder came back in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.82 seconds, surpassing his previous personal best of 44.05 set during last week’s Tri-Valley League meet against Estacada and La Salle Prep at Estacada.

“Of the two races, I’m probably stronger in the 110 hurdles,” Vandenbroeder said. “I’m working at getting better in the 300s and maybe someday it will switch. I like to do my best in both, though.

“I’ve got a lot of meets left and a lot of improvement to be made, hoping to get that state championship this year.”

Among Saturday’s other highlights for Molalla:

-- Senior Darian Baughman popped a leap of 18 feet, 11 inches in the long jump, breaking his previous personal best of 18-3.

-- Senior Scott Chance placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 52.85, while junior Payton Dobbs ran a personal best of 24.07 in the 200, and freshmen Kevin Trujillo (12.10) and Gavin Thrower (12.25) posted their fastest times of the season in the 100.

-- Sophomore Audrey Bever placed sixth in the girls’ 300 hurdles with a time of 50.35 and posted a personal best in the 1,500 of 5:30.40.

-- Freshman Desiirae DesRosiers posted her fastest times of the season with a 17.78 in the 100 hurdles and 51.32 in the 300 hurdles, placing third among freshmen in both events.

-- In the shot put, Rachel Bring finished sixth overall and first among freshmen with a personal best of 32-10.

Emily Bever, Molalla's two-time defending Class 4A girls' 800 state champion, skipped Saturday's meet after straining a hamstring during last week's Tri-Valley League meet at Estacada and is questionable for this week's Centennial Invitational.
