The Indians came in with the 10th-fastest qualifying time among the 15 Class 4A teams at the state meet and ran in the slower of Saturday's two finals heats.

Chance, who ran in Friday's boys' 400 preliminaries, got off to a decent start and Molalla appeared to have clean exchanges all the way around as the Indians finished fourth in their heat behind Brookings-Harbor (44.64), Cottage Grove (44.73) and Philomath (44.84)

Five of the seven teams in the second heat posted faster times than Molalla, led by Central with a winning time of 43.31.

Molalla's short relay finished second at the Tri-Valley Conference district championships in 44.47 -- a time that would have garnered the Indians fifth place on Saturday if they could have matched that performance.
