Molalla's Mont Child throws discus 115-8 at National Junior Olympics meet

Molalla’s Mont Child threw the discus 115 feet, 8 inches Saturday and finished 28th in a field of 40 throwers in the boys’ 15-16 division at the USATF National Junior Olympics Championships at Turner Stadium in Humble, Texas.

Child scratched on his first attempt, hit a mark of 108 feet on his second throw, and then unleashed his best throw on his final attempt of the preliminary round. The 115-8 mark also surpassed his regional qualifying mark of 113-5.

Adrian Piperi of The Woodlands, Texas, won the event with a throw of 172-6, while Bailey King of Union High School in Vancouver, Wash., placed second at 171-10.

Child, who posted a personal best of 127-9 as a freshman last March, would have needed a throw of 131-7 to crack the top 20 in Saturday’s field and a throw of 155-2 or better to place among the top eight throwers to reach the final.

Child finished 21st in Thursday’s shot put with a throw of 44-7 and is scheduled to compete in Sunday morning’s javelin competition beginning at 8 a.m. (CDT).
