2017 Class 3A state tournament recap: Senior Sam Spurgeon was the only Viking to qualify for the state tournament last season, as he earned his way there with a third-place league finish. Spurgeon earned a first-round bye and then lost to Dayton's Zach Russell in the quarterfinal round by a 12-2 major decision to send him into the consolation bracket. In the second consolation round, Spurgeon made quick work of La Pine's Michael Heutzerroeder with a 34 second pin to advance to the next round. Spurgeon battled with Nyssa's Jonathan Iniguez for nearly two full rounds before falling in 4:43 to end his run in the tournament.
Seniors lost: 1 – Sam Spurgeon (152) – Spurgeon qualified for the state tournament with a third-place finish in the Class 3A Special District 2 after pinning Scio's Josiah Nordstrom in 2:32 in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinals, he fell to Harrisburg's Dax Bennett in 1:43 to move onto the consolation semifinal round, where he pinned Jefferson's Kyll Murray in 1:02 to earn his way into the third place match. Spurgeon then fought his way into the state tournament by pinning Santiam Christian's Daniel Hudson in 1:46 to take third place.
Key returners: Sophomore Gabriel Farrell (120), Special District 2 fifth place – Farrell took fifth place's at last year's league tournament despite not winning any of his matches; he earned a bye into the semifinals and then fell to Scio's Logan Martin in 3:12 to send him into the consolation semifinals, where he fell to Pleasant Hill's Thomas Bardgett in 3:41 as he advanced to the fifth place match, winning by forfeit over Creswell's Raven Rimer.
Junior Joseph Reed (160) – Reed finished with a 6-10 record on the season and battled with Jefferson's Skyler Williams in the league quarterfinal round before falling in 4:44 to move onto the consolation bracket, where he was unable to compete against Creswell's Josh Mitchell due to a medial forfeit. The Vikings will also return senior Logan Sprague, sophomore Jack Bishop, and junior Cameron Phillips, who all competed in the league tournament last season.
First meet: The Viks will travel to Scio for a four-way meet between Creswell, Gervais, and Scio on Tuesday, Jan. 10
