Man turns self in for murder of woman

Former Madras resident calls from local store

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Joshua Leo JokinenA former Madras man, who was sentenced to prison in 2006 for a brutal attack on a local man, turned himself in to authorities last week for the murder of a 78-year-old Sisters area woman.

Joshua Leo Jokinen, 30, of Pendleton, called the Frontier Regional 911, the Condon dispatch center, from a Madras store on Aug. 31, and reported that he may have killed a woman.

According to Tanner Stanfill, assistant Madras police chief, a city police officer contacted Jokinen at the local store, "and Mr. Jokinen implicated himself in a homicide."

"Ultimately, Jokinen was arrested on a probation violation hold," said Stanfill. "During this process, it was discovered in Deschutes County that there had indeed been a homicide."

Jokinen was taken to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, booked and held for Deschutes County. He is alleged to have hit Carolyn Burdick, 78, with a shovel, causing her death.

Burdick lived on a horse farm in Cloverdale, where she raised Arabian horses. Police have not yet released information about why Jokinen was at Burdick's home.

Jokinen was arraigned in the Deschutes County Circuit Court Sept. 3, on a charge of murder. On Sept. 4, a Deschutes County grand jury returned an indictment charging Jokinen with murder. The indictment alleges that the defendant was on supervision for a criminal offense and that Burdick was in a particularly vulnerable state when the defendant murdered her.

He was being held without bail until his court appearance on Sept. 10. Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty indicated that he will ask that Jokinen continue to be held without bail.

Stanfill was surprised to hear that Jokinen called and reported the crime. "He said he had committed a homicide and wanted to be taken to jail. I’ve never seen it happen in Madras in 15 years, but it happened."
