War memorial to honor airmen

Madras airport monument

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Construction of the new Veterans Memorial Plaza, which will be located on the west end of Cherry Lane, is expected to get underway this week. The city expects to break ground on a the World War II veterans memorial plaza at the Madras Municipal Airport this week, but has yet to solidify the list of veterans.

"The whole purpose of this is to recognize air veterans from World War II," said Sara Puddy, assistant to the city administrator. "If you know of anyone who should be recognized, who either served as a World War II air veteran at the Madras base, or was a Jefferson County resident who was based elsewhere, contact me."

The plaza, to be located on the west end of Cherry Lane, near the airport and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, will feature a 10-foot bronze obelisk monument, topped by a model of a B-17 aircraft.

Steele Associate Architects have designed the plaza, which will include a paver plaza with lighting, landscaping, a flagpole, benches, sidewalk and curb, and decorative boulders.

The project, expected to cost $121,026.35, will be partially funded with a $55,000 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, another $41,326 in donations and grants, $2,500 in cash donations, $5,000 from the county, and $17,200 from the city, leaving about $18,000 to finance.

"We're still looking for cash, material or labor donations for the plaza," said Puddy.
