Fatal wreck near Madras

Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into an early Sunday morning single-vehicle traffic crash along U.S. Highway 26 south of Madras that resulted in the death of an adult male.

Deceased at the scene was Scott Joseph Young, 50, of Oregon City, who was driving a 1997 Jeep Wrangler at the time of the accident.

On Sunday, Nov. 10, at approximately 7:12 a.m., a property resident reported a single vehicle traffic crash off the south side in the 3100 block of Highway 26 about a mile from Highway 97.

Upon arrival, OSP and Jefferson County Fire District personnel confirmed there was a deceased adult male underneath the overturned vehicle.

Preliminary investigation indicates the Jeep Wrangler driven by Young was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 1 when it traveled onto the right shoulder.

The driver overcorrected and lost control as the vehicle traveled across the highway, struck a driveway culvert and went airborne. The vehicle went airborne over several large bushes and rolled before coming to rest on its top with the victim underneath it.

The vehicle was approximately 35 yards off the southwest side of Highway 26 and wasn't visible from the highway because of the high bushes it came to rest behind.

It appears the vehicle was at the scene for several hours. The property resident didn't hear the crash and only saw the overturned vehicle after getting up in the morning.

OSP troopers from the Madras worksite are continuing the investigation in the cause of the crash. Senior trooper John Russo is the lead investigator. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, fire personnel, ambulance personnel, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
