Winners announced

by: BILL VOLLMER - The Norton Cattle Co. truck was the overall winner in the Christmas Lights Parade on Saturday, Dec. 7. The parade, put on by the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, had 20 entries.Twenty businesses, nonprofits and individuals made up the parade entries to the 2013 Christmas Lights Parade on Saturday, to the delight of 300-plus spectators lining the parade route.

A frosty Library Band plays during the parade.Even though other parades had been canceled because of temperatures hovering at or below zero, the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce decided that the blue skies, lack of wind, and crisp snow covering earlier overrode any thought of cancellation.

"We are a hardy community wanting to start the upcoming holiday season right with the Chamber Parade and Sahalee Park Christmas tree lighting," said Joe Krenowicz, chamber executive director.

This year, the blue spruce Christmas tree has 1,741 lights showcasing its beauty at Sahalee Park.

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Matty Buck was the winner of the best lights award for the parade."Due to the cold weather, entries and spectator counts were naturally down, but the appreciative comments fielded prior and after the event were passed onto the dozen-plus volunteers making the event happen," said Krenowicz.

Those attending the parade were pleasantly surprised by entries from the business and agriculture sectors, nonbusinesses and nonprofits, and individuals riding four-wheelers, horses and one mule.

"We probably should have named this year's event 'The 2013 Chamber Polar Parade,'" said Krenowicz.

Winners in the parade included: best theme - Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; individual nonbusiness - Jefferson County Library Band; best business - Home Federal Bank; best lights - Matty Buck; and best overall - Norton Cattle Co.

by: HOLLY M. GILL - Zoey Adams, 3, was among dozens of children who had their picture taken with Santa after the parade.Afterwards, children and parents headed over to Madras Bowl for photos with Santa. The chamber passed out candy canes to children, who lined up to have their photos taken.
