Man injured after hopping train

Early May 22, at about 3:50 a.m., deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a medical call in the area of Opal Lane and Norris Lane regarding a person struck by a train.

“Medics from Redmond Fire arrived at about the same time as our deputy and found a male with an injured ankle along with various cuts and scrapes,” according to Marc Heckathorn, patrol captain with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigation discovered that two males boarded a freight train as it was going through Bend in an effort to cross town. When they attempted to exit the train one person’s leg got tangled in the train coupling and he was unable to free himself for about 10 minutes.

“Once his leg was freed, they reached the area of Opal Lane and jumped off the train and went to the nearest house to get help,” Heckathorn said.

Redmond Fire personnel transported the injured parties to St. Charles Redmond for treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries. The incident is being referred to Burlington Northern Railroad Police for potential criminal charges.

“This matter could have ended much worse for everyone involved and we remind everyone that all rail roads are private property and to stay clear of the tracks,” Heckathorn said.
