City seeks suggestions for cleanup projects

Funded by garbage collection fee

The city of Madras is looking for ideas and suggestions for cleanup events or projects for the community.

The projects can be funded with money set aside annually by the county for community cleanup projects. Projects funded in years past include: graffiti removal, trash disposal at the Jefferson County Youth Fishing Pond, garbage removal assistance from a mobile home site, vandalism repairs at city parks, and projects that address long-term nuisances (i.e. illegal garbage dumping).

If you have a suggestion or idea for a community project that would benefit the community, you are invited to complete a Community Cleanup Project Form available on the city’s website homepage at www.ci.madras.or.us or at the Madras City Hall. All submitted suggestion forms will be presented to the Madras City Council for consideration.

In 2008, Jefferson County, the city of Madras and other neighboring jurisdictions entered into an agreement to provide a source of funding to maintain affordable public access to the Box Canyon Transfer Station — which was later transferred to Madras Sanitary Services — as well as recycling and community cleanup efforts.

The source of the funding are the Jefferson County unified fees: for each ton of garbage collected in the county, a $12 fee is assessed. From the $12 per ton fee, $3 goes toward funding public access, recycling and community cleanup projects.

The funds are distributed to cities within Jefferson County, based on population, for the sole purpose of community cleanup events or programs. Based on that formula, the city of Madras receives approximately 40 percent of the funds annually.
