A cougar wandering around a trailer park on C Street in Madras was shot by an officer for safety reasons last Friday.
According to Undersheriff Marc Heckathorn, on Friday, "A person reported seeing a cougar on their back porch that was chasing cats."
He said Madras Police Detective Steve Webb responded and confirmed the sighting.
"We called Jon Belozer, with wildlife services connected with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and consulted with him and the decision to dispatch the animal was made," Heckathorn said.
"We would have tried to trap it, but it had been wandering around the trailer park and didn't run away or show fear of humans, and it was by a hiking path," Heckathorn said of the trailer park, which is below the M Hill trail on the west side of Madras.
He said the animal was killed with a single shot.
No pets they know of were killed by the cougar. Heckathorn said Belozer will be checking to see if there are any additional cougars in the area.
