Bend man dies in Highway 97 crash
A Bend man, Jonathan Stern, 33, was fatally injured in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 97, about 6 miles south of Madras, on Sept. 20.
According to Sgt. Michael Berland, of Oregon State Police, law enforcement officers responded to the report of the accident around 11:15 p.m., near milepost 103.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2007 Audi sedan was traveling northbound when for unknown reasons it crossed over the centerline. The Audi collided head-on in the southbound lane with a southbound white 2012 Peterbuilt semitruck pulling an empty livestock trailer.
The driver of the Audi, Jonathan Stern, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The truck driver, 64-year-old James Mohring, sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. Charles Redmond for treatment.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Jefferson County Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation. The highway was shut for approximately four hours.
