September temperatures slightly warmer
Temperatures at Madras averaged slightly warmer than normal during the month of September, according to preliminary data received by the National Weather Service in Pendleton.
The average temperature was 58.7 degrees, which was 1.1 degrees above normal. High temperatures averaged 77.0 degrees, which was 0.6 degrees above normal. The highest was 102 degrees on September 2.
Low temperatures averaged 40.4 degrees, which was 1.6 degrees above normal. The lowest was 29 degrees, on the 21st.
There were four days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. On five days, the temperature exceeded 90 degrees. It was at least 100 degrees on one day.
Precipitation totaled 0.65 inches during September, which was 0.24 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on five days with the heaviest, 0.30 inches reported on the 20th.
Precipitation this year has reached 6.18 inches, which is 0.79 inches below normal. Since October, the water-year precipitation at Madras has been 10.33 inches, which is 0.12 inches below normal.
The highest wind gust was 37 mph, which occurred on Sept. 17.
During the month of September, there were three lightning flashes detected in the vicinity of Madras, according to Earth Networks.
The outlook for October from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal temperatures and near normal precipitation. Normal highs for Madras fall from 71.0 degrees at the start of October to 56.0 degrees at the end of October.
Normal lows fall from 34.0 degrees to 29.0 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.85 inches.
