To the Editor,

Thank you to the class of 2014.

I have been retired for a year after having taught at Madras High School for almost 20 years.

Retirement is great but I miss interacting with kids. Thank you to the class of 2014 for requesting that I speak at graduation. The fact that you wanted me to come back and address you on your special day will always mean a great deal to me. I consider it to be one of the greatest honors of my life.

Good luck to all of you as life unfolds. You folks rock! Go Buffs!

To the Editor,

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), an Oregon nonprofit reading program, just finished up another great year helping pre-K through third-grade students learn and love to read in Central Oregon.

During the 2013-2014 school year, SMART has helped more than 670 children improve reading skills and taught them the pure joy of reading.

SMART had 380 volunteers help children with reading comprehension, word association and other reading skills this year, and all without the kids knowing it – they thought they were just having fun!

There are 25 sites in Central Oregon this year that participate in this great program. The teachers know the benefits their students gain from the program, and parents love it also and ask for their children to participate.

Not only do these children learn, they also get to take home two books every month so they can keep the love of reading going all day, all year, and throughout their life. SMART gave away 7,790 books this year to students – that’s a lot of love!

This Oregon-based program has touched many lives over the past 22 years and we look forward to doing more, giving more and sharing more with as many children as possible in the future. We’re hoping to have over 750 children participate for the 2014-2015 school year!

If you, or anyone you know, would love to be part of this fantastic program, to either donate time, books or dollars so we can continue to enrich the lives of children through the love of reading, then please log on to to sign up or donate today.
