Special days highlight fair events

by: FILE PHOTO - 4-H club members get their sheep washed and ready for judging.Special days have been designated to honor veterans, children and senior citizens during the fair, which runs July 25-28.

Wednesday

Wednesday is “Opening Day, Veterans Day,” beginning at 8 a.m., with a free breakfast for veterans, sponsored by the Jefferson County Veterans Services. Opening ceremonies are at 9:30 a.m., and exhibits open to the public at 10 a.m.

Talent show preliminaries start at 6 p.m., on the Les Schwab main stage.

Thursday

Thursday is Kids Day, with kids’ games in the picnic pavilion from 10 a.m. to 3 :30 p.m., sponsored by BestCare Prevention. There will also be a K-9 dog demonstration by the sheriff’s department near the pavilion at 2 p.m.

Talent Show finals will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by music from the Box Canyon Bluegrass Band on the Les Schwab main stage.

A Family Fun Night at 6 p.m., in the Corwin Arena, sponsored by Green Cattle Co., features stick horse races (for kids 6-8, and 5 and under), cow penning, cowboy rescue race, team branding and family team roping. Register at 541-604-0738, by 5 p.m., July 25. The entry fee is $20 per person in each event. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three places.

The Kids Pedal Tractor Pull will be back for exciting competition and fun, sponsored by Central Oregon Seeds Inc. and Les Schwab Tire Center.

Friday

Friday is Senior Citizen Day, with the annual senior citizen potluck picnic held at 5 p.m., in the outdoor pavilion, sponsored by Xi Delta Mu. Entertainment will be music by the Brewer Boys.

Prior to the rodeo, Wild Donkey Races will be held in the Corwin Arena. Competing in teams, one person rides the donkey and the other one leads it to a line, before they switch for the race back. Contestants must be 18 or older.

The Jefferson County Fair Rodeo opens at 6 p.m., with Wild Horse Racing as the first attraction, sponsored by Gary Gruner Chevrolet.

Singer Scott Brockett will entertain on the Les Schwab main stage at 7:30 p.m., and the Concrete Cowboys Band will play at 9 p.m.

Saturday

Saturday is “Can Cancer Day – Wear Purple” promoting cancer awareness, and everyone is encouraged to show their support by wearing purple.

Don’t miss the Buckaroo Breakfast, sponsored by the Madras McDonald’s restaurant, from 8-10 a.m., in the picnic pavilion, featuring eggs, sausage and bacon, hashbrowns, biscuits, coffee and juice for $5 per plate. Proceeds benefit 4-H and the fairgrounds.

The Outdoor Cookoff grills from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the pavilion, and Kiwanis Barbecue is from 2-5 p.m.

The 4-H and FFA livestock shows run all week, and the livestock auction is at 5 p.m., Saturday, in the Livestock Show Arena.

The Fair Rodeo begins at 6 p.m. in the Corwin Arena. B Bar D is providing stock and putting on the rodeo.

At 9 p.m., the Concrete Cowboys will entertain on the Les Schwab main stage.
