Jack Root during World War II.All friends and relatives of Madras resident Jack Root are invited to help celebrate his 90th birthday from 2-4 p.m., Aug. 17, at a reception at the Free Methodist Church in Madras. It is asked that your presence be the only gift.

A World War II Army veteran, Root fought in Luzon in the Philippines, was wounded and received Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

Jack and Eileen Root moved from Idaho to Madras in 1948, and farmed on Agency Plains until he retired in 1989. After his first wife passed away, he and Virginia Carlson were married on Aug. 17, 2006.

Root served on the Jefferson County Co-op Board, and is a part-owner of Central Oregon Seeds Inc., and Central Oregon Basalt.

He has three children, Peggy Boyle and Nancy Couch, both of Madras, and the late Dolores Clark; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
