Rotary event to benefit Kids Club

The Kids Club of Jefferson County has been selected as the recipient of funds raised at this year’s Cherry Tree Celebration, sponsored by the Jefferson County Rotary Club.

Each year, the dinner, golf tourney, and auction event raises from $10,000 to $15,000 to benefit a community group or organization. The chosen group then partners with Rotary members to put on the event.

Kids Club Director Joe McHaney noted, “We will use the funds to improve and modernize our game room, since the equipment we have is falling apart and almost a safety concern.”

He said the club would like to purchase two new foosball tables, and one air hockey table, several arcade games, freshen the paint, and get some bean bag chairs and more seating, since they only have two couches now.

“The game room hasn’t been drawing the kids, and one of my main goals since coming onboard was to get funds to make a really good game room and a fun hangout center. That will also make it more attractive for the once-a-month Saturday Teen Nights we have," he said.

McHaney said the Kids Club had an average of 135 students daily a year ago, and currently serves 215-220 students a day. In addition, the club partners with the 509-J School District on after-school tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays for up to 290 students a day.

Aside from the Rotary project, McHaney mentioned that if anyone has upgraded to a flat-screen TV and wants to get rid of their old box-style TV, the Kids Club needs three or four older TVs, which will be used for interactive Wii games in the game room.

If you have a TV to donate, contact McHaney at the Kids Club at 541-475-7028.
