Funds cut to senior meals programs

The Senior Citizens of Jefferson County group is grappling with a reduction of funds for its meals programs.

The group runs both the senior meal site program, which offers hot meal three days a week at the senior center, and the Meals on Wheels program for the Madras and Culver areas.

The federal Older American’s Act is an important source of partial funding for both programs, but Congress has reduced the amount funded.

“Due to this reduction, we have suffered a serious blow to both programs, especially the Meals on Wheels one. Even with our volunteer drivers, who are not reimbursed for their mileage or fuel, we are still losing money on an ongoing basis,” said Helmer Wallan, president of SCJC.

“Our senior program has been helping out, through the use of rental income (from the center), but they also are being drawn into the same financial hole,” he added.

Wallan said any financial donations from the community would be appreciated to help keep these two senior programs going.

Donations may be made to the SCJC Kitchen Fund, and mailed to Jefferson County Senior Center, P.O. Box 696, Madras, OR 97741.
