A Madras woman, Judy Barker (Embanks) will soon be traveling to the Holy Land.

She will be visiting Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Jordan with a group of over 20 from the Lutheran Church, Oregon Synod.

The mission of the journey is to more clearly understand the cultural, religious, and political differences faced by the people of those areas every day.

Emphasis will be on meeting direct descendants of Christian people who lived in the land during the time of Jesus' life.

They call themselves "the Stones" -- a Biblical reference in  1 Peter 2:5 -- "you also, like living stones are being built into a spiritual house."

A DVD, "The Stones Cry Out," tells their story. Those who have a group interested in viewing the DVD, may contact Barker at 541-475-5557.

The Oregon group will meet with local Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders while traveling. They share a divided land no larger than the Willamette Valley, with 6 million people living in that space. That’s double Oregon's population living in less than one-third of the land area.

Upon her return, Barker plans to show photos and talk about the experience.
