Earn boater's card at class

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for a busy boating season and wants boaters to be ready for summertime fun by taking time to educate themselves on boat safety and rules.

All persons residing in Oregon must now possess a boater’s education card to legally operate a motor boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more. The sheriff’s office is providing an additional option to those who do not want to take the test on the Internet by providing a proctored classroom course and test.

The class will be from 6-8 p.m., June 17, at the sheriff’s office in Madras.

The proctored class is taught by a deputy and takes about two hours to complete. The class includes a study session and concludes with a test.

Those who pass are provided a certificate of completion which they can send to the Oregon State Marine Board, who will issue the boater’s education card.

Call the sheriff’s office at 541-475-6520 to reserve your spot, or show up the night of testing.
