After 20 years of owning Ralph's Furniture and TV, Ed and Donna Hagedorn are selling the building and closing the business.
The pending sale of the building is to Bed Mart, of Portland, which will carry beds and furniture.
The store is holding a liquidation sale through Aug. 18, with an additional 5 percent off to the first 50 customers, and an extra 5 percent off for customers who haul their own purchases.
This also marks the end of Ralph's TV, which was opened 43 years ago in Madras by Ralph and Darlene Casady. In 1973, they opened as Round Butte TV Service, then opened a showroom and sold TVs and stereos.
The Casadys had a Radio Shack franchise from 1976-1993, and were located next to Erickson's Sentry Market. They began a rent-to-own program for electronics, appliances and furniture, and were the first retailers in Central Oregon to offer a "six months, same as cash" program.
In 1993, they dropped the Radio Shack franchise and moved across the street to the current location at 525 SE Fifth St. in Madras. When the Casadys retired in 1977, the Hagedorns purchased the business.
The Hagedorns did an extensive facelift and renovation, adding a showroom and storage space. The work was accomplished with the help of a Madras Community Redevelopment Grant in partnership with the Hagedorns.
"What we're excited about with the new business is that they are very positive people, and to have them follow us, and have furniture and beds at the same location is great," said Donna Hagedorn.
During the years they ran the business, she said, "One thing that was a lot of fun was we hired several high school and college kids to help us on weekends and in the summer during their breaks. It helped us, and helped some of them pay bills in college."
In retirement, she said they plan to spend more time enjoying their kids and grandkids. Donna will also be helping her brother with their aging mother, who lives in Madras, while Ed will devote more time to Ed's Drafting, his computer-aided drafting business.
"We're really going to miss all the customers we've gotten to know, and thank everybody we've been able to serve," Donna Hagedorn said.
