More than 100,000 visitors are expected in the Madras area for the total solar eclipse, which will occur on Aug. 21, beginning at 9:06 a.m. Traffic will be heavy, lines for food and at stores will be long, and campsites will be sold out.
Visitors should be prepared:
. Don't think you can pick up items when you get here. Supplies will be limited and may sell out.
. Make sure your vehicle/RV has been serviced and fueled up (with gas and propane).
. Carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle as August is wildfire season and overheated vehicles can cause brush fires.
. Don't leave valuables in your car, including cell phones, telescopes and binoculars.
. Text when possible, to keep cell phones lines open.
. Carry an Oregon map, as GPS may not work due to excess cell phone use.
. Trash – pack it out and leave no trace.
What to bring:
. Plenty of water, snacks and food.
. Necessary medications.
. Cash, as ATMs may run out.
. Eclipse viewing glasses (also sold here).
. A hat or visor.
. A light jacket or sweatshirt for evening hours.
. Comfortable walking shoes (flip-flops are not good in our desert conditions).
. Folding chairs.
