Christian school has big signup
Madras Christian School will reopen its doors in Sept. 7. The school, in operation for 60 years, closed temporarily in 2011.
On Aug. 15, the school held an open house, which was attended by around 40 people.
So far, 25 students have signed up, which is more than one teacher is allowed to have. So, the school would have to hire a teacher's assistant or a second teacher if they are all enrolled.
The new teacher Melissa McCrery has moved to Madras from College Place, Washington, where she completed her teaching degree at Walla Walla University in 2016.
"She is into project-based learning, is very creative and very outdoorsy – a good fit for Central Oregon," said Diane Gibbons, who previously taught at the school.
She will be teaching grades one through eight. While working on her degree, she worked as a teacher's aide and student teacher for five years.
She was also the head chef and head baker at Big Lake Youth Camp outside of Sisters.
Her experience as an assistant dean for 85-plus students in Denmark has given her additional skills for tutoring students, organizing assemblies, and planning student activities.McCrery's hobbies include baking, hiking, reading, traveling, and volleyball. For more information on Madras Christian School, call 541-475-7575 or 541-350-4243.
