> Rylee Sweeney kick-started her college financing last month.
Thanks to The Center Foundation, which is a philanthropic part of The Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Center of the Cascades, Sweeney, who is just completing her junior year at Madras High, will have $1,500 in her college fund.
The scholarship was one of seven awarded to Central Oregon student-athletes who were juniors during the 2002-2003 school year. According to the group distributing the awards, the recognition was in honor of each recipient's "dedication and hard work while encouraging other youngsters to follow in their tracks."
Sweeney was a starter in soccer, basketball and softball for Madras over the course of this past school year.
The Center Foundation's presentation stated:
"Rylee is a 4.0 student, junior class president and team captain on the soccer and basketball teams. She plays softball and is very involved in the Madras community, where she coaches at kids' camps, referees Kiwanis Kids' basketball and participates in Oregon Student Safety on the Move and the Builder's Club."
Madras softball coach Dick Souers showed enough confidence in her skills and versatility to use Sweeney at shortstop, third base and first base at different times.
She was also nominated for all-league honors in both soccer and basketball by coach Mike Osborne.
