Gish takes Men's Club title
Morales two strokes off the pace, finishes second
Don Gish rallied from four strokes down after the first day to win the Madras Men's Golf Association club championship Sunday at Desert Peaks Golf Course in Madras.
Gish finished with a 36-hole score of 77-70–147, two strokes ahead of Francisco Morales. Morales shot a 73-76–149 and led after the first day of the tournament Saturday.
Gish teed off in the second foursome on the tournament's final day, and was in fifth place before he started to make his move up the leaderboard.
Chuck Schmidt, who started the second day tied for third place with Lowell Patterson with a 76, ended up finishing third in the top flight with a 76-75–151.
Patterson ended up with the top net score of the first flight with a 135. Clifford Reynolds and Sam Brown tied for second in the net division with a 136.
In the second flight, Rawlin Richardson took top honors in the gross division with a score of 84-83–167, and Kurt Ocker finished second with an 87-84–171.
Don Kraus and Shane Bush each carded a 173 to tie for third in the second flight's gross division. Both golfers shot a 92 to open the tournament, and then shaved a stroke off their scores with 91s on the second day.
In the net division during the second flight, Dave Rosenfield turned in a 135 for the low score, followed by Steve Thill's 141. Jim Manion turned in a 142 for third.
Net scores factor in the golfer's handicap, by being subtracted from the gross score, which is meant to level the playing field.
Upcoming events at Desert Peaks are the Men's Twilight League championships at 6 p.m. Aug. 14, and the Central Oregon Senior Women Golf Association will hold an event on Aug. 19.
There will also be an 18-hole flag tournament to celebrate Labor Day on Sept. 2, and the course will be closed Sept. 9 to aerate the putting greens.
