Champions never stop

Despite layoff, Buffs still working hard in the pool

The Madras High School swim team hasn’t had a meet since Dec. 14, but that doesn’t mean they have been out of the pool.

While the White Buffalos were originally scheduled to compete in the Gresham Invitational on Dec. 28, the meet was moved to Friday, Jan. 3. It creates back-to-back meets with Saturday’s Jay Rowan Invitational in Redmond, but Madras head coach Bobby DeRoest said he didn’t mind that at all. In fact, the district and state meets are two-day events, so from that standpoint, this weekend could mimic one of those competitions.

In the meantime, the Buffs have been putting even more work in the pool during the winter break from school and the hiatus from meets. DeRoest said he has the swimmers in the pool for morning and afternoon practices to help stay in shape.

“With the holidays in the middle of week, it makes it a little tough practicewise because I want the kids to spend those with family,” DeRoest said. “But we’ve been hitting it pretty hard, so we’ll see how well they did to stay in shape when we have our meets this weekend.”

The Buffs were supposed to have back-to-back events the same weekend as the Bend Winter Classic, the last meet the Buffs swam in, with a dual against Centennial at the Madras Aquatic Center. That event, however, was canceled.

Madras’ next home event will be Jan. 18 for the White Buffalo Classic.
