Girls fall in dual with Class 6A Gresham school
The Madras High School swim teams dove back into the pool Thursday with duals against Sam Barlow of Gresham at Sam Barlow High School.
The boys squeaked out an 87-83 win against the Class 6A Bruins, and the girls fell 126-38.
On the boys side, 20 points came from the three relay events. The team of Ian Goodwin, Ryan Goss, Brandon Hunt and Bryce Williams won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 52.92 seconds. Josh Hocker and Brady Tucker teamed with Williams and Goodwin to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:31.08.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Keaton Hartman, Bryan Bueno, Vance Schierling and Bryce Schierling finished second with a time of 1:47.70.
Other event winners for the Buffs were Williams in the 100 freestyle (52.80), Hunt in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.85), Hocker in the 50 freestyle (25.47) and Tucker in the 200 freestyle (1:59.18).
The dual was nip and tuck through its entirety. The White Buffalos held a slim lead going into the 100 butterfly event, the fifth of the dual, but the Bruins posted nine points to Madras seven and tied the dual at 39-39.
The Buffs regained the lead following the 100 freestyle, but the Bruins again tied it all up after the 500 freestyle.
Barlow surged ahead 73-67 following big performances in the 200 freestyle relay and 100 backstroke, but the Buffs responded with Hunts top finish in the 100 breaststroke, along with Hartmans second-place finish and Vance Schierlings fourth-place finish in the event.
The trio earned 12 huge points for the Buffs, which gave them a 79-77 lead before the 400 freestyle relay team sealed the dual victory with a win.
On the girls side, the Buffs were simply outnumbered.
Swimming without top swimmer Sophie Gemelas, the Buffs had a few second-place performers earn them points.
Cirelle Frank finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:32.65, and Aurora Gerhardt earned two silver medals in the 100 freestyle (59.43) and 100 backstroke (1:06.82).
Melissa Field also earned a second-place spot in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:47.94.
The Buffs will host the White Buffalo Classic this Saturday at the Madras Aquatic Center.
Madras swim club paddles strong at Seth Dawson Invite
The Madras Swim Team, a club team not affiliated with the high school program, competed in Gresham at the Seth Dawson?Invitational on Friday and Saturday, and had a number of nice performances.
In the girls open division, Sophie Gemelas earned points in all six of her events. She placed second in three of the events the 100-yard butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke and third in the 200 individual medley. She also added a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and a sixth-place finish in the 400 individual medley.
Connor Flu, competing in the boys 8-and-under division, turned in some great times in his events. He raced to second-place in the 50 backstroke, with a time of 44.35 seconds, and also finished second in the 100 individual medley with a 1:41.39.
Flu placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:29.66.
Ethan Graeme placed eighth in the 9- to 10-year-old 100 IM with a time of 1:38.24, and Josh Gregory finished seventh in the boys 8-and-under 100 backstroke with a time of 2:25.75.
Karson Hartman picked up two finishes inside the top 10 in the boys 9- to 10-year old. He finished fifth in the 50 breaststroke (48.63) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
Autumn White placed 11th in the girls 8-and-under 100 backstroke and 100 IM.
