MHS boys take first

Running on a shortened schedule this year has not dampened the Madras track and field team results.

The White Buffalos took first place in the boys division Saturday at the Burns Invitational, holding off Lakeview 136-33. The girls, running shorthanded, placed sixth.

"The team did well and I am very proud of them," Madras coach Melissa Bowerman said. "Our numbers were really down, but they worked so hard to place well despite that. And they came home with 25 personal bests."

Drake Anderson led the way for the Buffs, winning the high jump with a personal best leap of 5-10. Anderson took second in the long jump at 18-03.5.

Fredy Ruiz Povis won the triple for the Buffs, turning in a personal best jump of 38-06.0 while Isaac Fisher took gold in the pole vault, going 11-00.

Other top placers for the boys included Clayton Smith (second in the 400 and third in the 800), Taylor Welsh (third in the 100 and second in the javelin) and Miklo Hernandez (third in the 200 and the 400).

In all, the boys brought home 15 placing ribbons, including eight silver medals.

On the girls' side, Elle Renault placed second in the javelin, while Mayra Renteria took fourth in the 100 hurdles. Kalan Wolfe was fifth in the 200, Kiana Rodriguez placed fourth in the 100 and the 400 relay team of Cheyenne Duncan, Rodriguez, Wolfe and Renteria took second.

The Buffs will compete at the La Pine Invitational on Saturday.
