After spending the first part of the season as a doubles partner with Obie Eriza, Madras senior Noel Cardenas has taken over the No. 1 singles spot for the White Buffalos has been playing well in it.

After struggling to even win a match last week, the Buffs rebounded nicely to take a close win over the Indians. The match ended in a 4-4 tie but Madras topped Molalla 90-82 in games won to take the win.

Cardenas defeated Johnny Hutchison 7-5, 6-3 to pace the Buffs’ win. Jacob Rudd, playing at No. 3 singles, rallied from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Eddie Rivera while the doubles teams of Omar Dominguez and Eriza, and Joey Jiminez and Voshaun Bryant scored wins as well.

The Buffs came close to taking to the win outright as Simon Sangha pushed Eric Dickson to three sets at No. 2 singles while Jered Pichette and Oved Felix also took their No. 1 doubles match to three sets.

While Cardenas and Eriza played well together at times, their approaches’ to the game differed so much that coach Margaret Kincaid had to make a move. Cardenas has openly said he plays just for fun while freshman Eriza is out to win.

So Eriza has a new partner that thinks the same way he does and Cardenas is free to play however he feels as a single.

So far, the move seems to be working. And it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The district tournament is less than two weeks away.
