Madras High School has filled one of its vacant head coaching slots and expects to have the other two filled within the next week, MHS athletic director Rory Oster said Monday.

“We are very excited to announce that Krista Hays will be the next head soccer coach at Madras High School,” Oster said.

Hays was selected by Oster and her approval by the Jefferson County School District board was expected to happen Monday night.

Hays has served as an assistant for the White Buffalos the last two seasons.

“She has a great background there and has a great relationship with the kids already,” Oster said. “There is that consistency that maintains when you carry that over. So we are really excited with what she will bring to our program.”

Oster said there were not very many applicants because he knew the avenue he wanted to take.

“I recruited Krista when the job came open,” Oster said. “She was my No. 1 pick from the get go.”

The two other openings the department has should fill quickly, Oster said.

He interviewed three candidates last week for the football position and is now waiting on some call backs on reference checks. He said he knows who we wants to offer the job to and expects to do that this week. If everything moves according to plan, he will make his recommendation to the school board at its next meeting.

Oster said about 15 applicants expressed interest in the job that opened up in February when Rich Wells stepped down.

The girls basketball coaching position will be filled by current co-head coach Zach Lillebo, Oster said. There are a few minor details that need to be worked out, but he said he expects Lillebo to be named to the position in the next two weeks.

All three coaches are expected to get started soon.
