Bulldogs keep improving with an eye on state

It's crunch time for the Culver track and field team and it responded in a good way last week at the Sisters Rotary Twilight Invitational.

Competing against mostly schools in higher classifications, the Bulldogs held their own and produced some more big numbers as the district meet looms.

The Culver boys, behind another great vault from Corey Sledge, scored 12 points, while the girls, getting solid performances from Hannah Lewis, Angelica Metteer, Lynze Schonneker and Ana Badillo, scored 48.5 points to place seventh.

Sledge, aiming to get his goal of 14 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, hit the 14-foot mark in placing second Friday. Sledge is still ranked second in Class 2A, half a foot behind Kavic Belcastro of Central Linn.

Other solid performance out of the meet included Travis Klopp hitting 5-08 in the high jump to place sixth, Joey Fraser 12th in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.42 and Alex Pettersen inching closer to the 40 foot mark in the shot put.

But the story was the girls placing sixth amongst the many 3A, 4A and 5A schools at the meet. Culver was the highest placing 2A school there and its points came from a variety of places.

Lewis had a nice meet, placing second in the 800, fourth in 1,500 and anchored both relays.

The Bulldogs 400 relay tandem of Gabrielle Alley, Andrea Retano, Ana Badillo and Lewis posted a time of 54.52 to place fourth. The 1,600 relay team of Badillo, Angelica Metteer, Retano and Lewis finished fourth at 4:36.92.

Badillo had a busy, yet productive day, placing fourth in the 200 at 28.80, just outside the classification's top 10 times. Badillo was also ninth in the 100 and ran both relays.

Metteer posted a time of 1:06.48 to take third in the 400, while Jessica Johnson ended up fourth at 1:06.98.

Lynze Schonneker took second in the shot put, moving closer to getting into the top 10 in the state in 2A with a put of 30-05, while Alley and Johnson took seventh in the javelin and high jump, respectively.

The Bulldogs have just one more meet on the schedule, Friday at Regis, before the district meet May 16-17 in Waldport.
