Mike McBride, Farmers InsuranceWhile many of us are excited to see this snowy winter end, spring has been unusually stormy as well. April's windstorm caused its fair share of damage—around 218,000 Portland General Electric customers lost power!

If you have a homeowner's policy with Farmers Insurance, you may be wondering whether your policy covers any rain damage from spring squalls. According to Insurance INSIDER Mike McBride, the answer is yes, if the damage was sudden and accidental. "If the wind is what causes the shingles to blow off, then absolutely, you have coverage. However, nine times out of ten, water damage is caused from a leaking roof that needs to be replaced. If wear and tear is the cause, it would not be covered," said Mike.

The best way to make sure that you will be covered for water damage is to be up-to-date on your home's maintenance. In addition to taking care of your roof, make sure to check and replace the wax ring on your toilet's base when needed to prevent your bathroom floor from getting spongy. Replace the water hoses on the back of your washing machine every two to three years.

Keep on top of your home repairs, and you can be sure you'll be covered when you hear a pipe burst, or come home from work to find the toilet overflowing. "A lot depends on you being an alert homeowner," said Mike. If you're interested in reviewing or updating your policy, call Farmers Insurance today.
