Newberg residents survive collision Sunday

Richard and Shilo Walters transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after crash Sunday

A pair of Newberg residents survived a brush with death last weekend in an apparent road rage incident on Highway 6 east of Tillamook that resulted in the death of a Beaverton man.

According to a report from the Oregon State Police, a 2009 Hyundai Sante Fe driven by 45-year-old Portland resident Trisha Jo Homan attempted to pass a 2001 Chrysler Sebring driven by Russell John Falotico, 56, of Beaverton, in the eastbound lane in a no passing zone at about 4 p.m. Sunday. Homan, according to the report, attempted to merge back into the lane to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle when it forced the Chrysler off the road into a gravel pullout. Falotico reportedly lost control of the car and slid into the westbound lane, where it collided with a 2004 Jeep Wrangler piloted by Shilo Marie Walters, 36, of Newberg.

Homan, it is reported, continued eastbound without stopping. Falotico was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Jeep, Richard R. Walters, 43, of Newberg, was transported by Life Flight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Shilo Walters was transported by ambulance to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash, interviewed later by OSP troopers, said Homan and Falotico were engaged in “road rage” behavior, prompting the state police to request that other law enforcement agencies be on the lookout for Homan and her Hyundai.

At 5 p.m. Beaverton police stopped Homan near Cedar Hills Boulevard and arrested her on charges of criminally negligent homicide, third-degree assault, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and felony hit and run. She was transported to the Tillamook County jail, where she was booked and released after posting bail.
