Low-income clinic grand opening set

Health care — Newberg Virginia Garcia Clinic will celebrate ribbon cutting Aug. 14

Although the dental component of the agency faces construction delays, the grand opening of the Virginia Garcia clinic will still take place Aug. 14.

“From what I understand it should be just a little later. Originally the dental clinic was supposed to be finished the end of July, but the delays encountered pushed back for a couple of weeks,” said Olivia MacKenzie, public relations officer for Virginia Garcia.

The health clinic moved into its permanent space May 19 and construction began on the dental side of things. Construction began on the clinic in February after receiving $750,000 in grant money from the federal government.

The clinic serves low-income patients and should see about 2,400 patients a year.

“A lot of patients can now be seen in Newberg. They were driving 30 minutes now they can walk,” she said.

The ribbon cutting ceremony starts at 9 a.m. Aug. 14 at the 2551 E. Hancock St. location. Representative Suzanne Bonamici will speak at the event as well as Mayor Bob Andrews and Virginia Garcia CEO Gil Muñoz.

“We’re hoping to have a patient on hand to share their story of how having the Newberg clinic open has impacted their care with Virginia Garcia (as well),” MacKenzie said.

After the speeches and ribbon cutting, visitors are free to tour the new facilities, although the dental clinic tour might be limited depending on construction.

“We wanted to be very inclusive in the community and want them to have a chance to meet as many people as we can and a chance to meet us and what we can offer to the community,” MacKenzie said.
