Heart healthy forum to celebrate American Heart Month

Providence Newberg Medical Center will give a talk on heart health from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 17. Cardiologist Dr. Lian Shaw will speak on cholesterol and hypertension to promote American Heart Month. Oregon 155 year celebration set for Feb. 14 in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE — A celebration of Oregon’s 155th birthday will be hosted by the Yamhill County Historical Society from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at 605 Market St. The event includes a tour of the Poling Memorial Church, Miller Log Cabin and exhibits specifically created to display life 155 years ago. Kickoff set for 2014 Relay for Life of Newberg event

Relay for Life of Newberg will kick off its 2014 event at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the commons area at Newberg High School. This year’s relay, with the theme “Drive Out Cancer,” will be a little different as it will start on Saturday, June 21, and continue into Sunday, June 22. Information about this year’s relay will be provided as well as an opportunity to sign up a team or as an individual. Twila Tschan, 2012 Miss Washington County, will be special guest speaker. Prizes and refreshments will also be available. Meyer Memorial Trust meeting set for Wednesday in county

The Meyer Memorial Trust will host two community meetings Feb. 12 in Newberg and McMinnville. The Newberg meeting will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Youth Outreach Drop In Center, 719 E. First St. The McMinnville meeting will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Yamhill Community Action Program, 1317 N.E. Dustin Court.

Meyer Memorial Trust Program Officers Sally Yee, Theresa Deibele and Kim Thomas will appear at these events to provide advice about seeking grants from Meyer Memorial Trust and to collect information about the needs of nonprofits and communities in the area.

Kathleen George, director, and Louis King, program officer, of Spirit Mountain Community Fund, will present at the meetings as well.

Conservation workshop set on controlling mud and manure

YAMHILL — FitzGerald Farms will host a workshop designed to teach farmers to minimize mud and manure runoff in order to improve livestock health and water quality. The workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 at 8490 N.W. Moore’s Valley Road. Reservations and a $10 lunch fee must be submitted by March 12. Snow forces event rescheduling

Due to the snow storm, the Newberg Public Library children’s room grand opening has been rescheduled. The event will now take place from 12 to 3 p.m. March 1.

A Civil War historical event at the Chehalem Cultural Center has also been rescheduled to 7 p.m. March 6.
