January Rex Hill Rainfall

By Lewis Schaad, for the Newberg Graphic

January had three distinct phases this year. We had some good warm, wet weather; some clear, sunny weather that made one want to go outside and work in the yard; and then some cold foggy days that made one wish they could sit in front of a blazing fireplace.

Our precipitation of 3.50 inches ranks it as a typical for January. Last year we had 1.63 inches. Our January average is now 6.50 inches. The wettest January was in 1953 with 14.91 inches and the driest was in 1985 with 0.25 inches.

Our average high temperature was 45.0 degrees, compared to last year’s 40.2 degrees, and the average low was 34.0 degrees, compared to 30.0 degrees last year.

The snow drops in our yard are in full bloom, as are the hazelnuts in the orchards around us. A number of daffodils have pushed their way out of the ground and are showing buds. The grapes are pruned with the old vines left to pull.

The county grader has again worked our road and dug up many of the chunks of asphalt that they buried a year ago.
