Theatre Auditions are opportunity for anyone to get involved, play will open in May
Open auditions for the May Valley Repertory Theater production of Barefoot in the Park will be held in early March.
Director Stephen Pick said auditions are always an opportunity for beginners and professionals alike.
Part of it is to train new actors. Some people come with years of experience and some with no experience at all, Pick said. And thats OK, we welcome that.
The production is written by Neil Simon, One of the great comedic writers, Pick said.
It centers around a newlywed couple, who find the honeymoon phase of their marriage disappearing rapidly as reality sets in and must fight to preserve their marriage in the midst of chaos.
(Simon is) the author of the Odd Couple as well. This is another really good example of his quick, witty, fun and ridiculous humor, Pick said. Some of these characters are just insane, crawling out of windows, across ceilings, its just like, What?
He said because of the quirky nature of the roles, those auditioning will need to showcase their abilities to take risks.
So anyone whos willing to put themselves out there on the stage, theyll do well, he said. Who can come in and push the limits of normalcy, to show they can play a whole bunch of different characters, those are going to be the people Im looking for.
But not all of the roles will be intense. Pick said there are a couple of parts that are considered cameo roles.
Theyre small compared to other characters. Its a great way for an actor who hasnt done much acting, who just wants to try a little bit, he said. Theres some opportunity there that sometimes appeals to people who want to get their feet wet but dont want to take on a leading lady.
