Providing shelter to Newberg’s growing homeless population is one of the most important services Love INC (In the Name of Christ) provides, which is why being a shelter host is such a big help to the charitable organization.

All it takes is one night a month for a pair of people, either a husband and wife or two women, to make a big difference, which is why Love INC is calling for volunteers at the Newberg Community Shelter this month.

Shelter hosts arrive at 6 p.m. to check in guests, dinner is provided by volunteers so that everyone can eat together before guest do chores, hang out together or watch movies until 10 p.m. Hosts have their own private bedroom and bathroom and the day begins again at 7 p.m. before guests must check out at 8 a.m. the following morning

The shelter is always looking for volunteers to provide meals, which must be enough to feed 12 people and can be dropped off once a month, as well as groups of two or more people to clean the shelter once a month on any day of the week.

In addition to shelter hosts, Love INC has listed monthly donors and volunteers for its Furniture Ministry as the top three needs for the month.

Specific Love INC ministry needs this month include twin, full and queen blankets and shower curtains for the Linen Closet at St. Peter Catholic Church, as well as children’s summer clothing for the Kids’ Clothes Closet at Newberg Church of Christ.

Multiple churches are collecting frozen meals, preferably family-size, and $10 gas cards, as well as pop-top cans of stew and granola bars for the Sack Lunch Kit ministry.

C3 Newberg’s Backpack and School Supplies ministry is in need of binders, copy paper, pencils, pens, erasers, calculators, rulers and backpacks.

Family Life Church’s Shear Joy Haircuts ministry is seeking hairstylists who are able to cut hair at the church once a month.

Donations can be dropped off at the Love INC office, 209 S. Main St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, or another time can be arranged by emailing [email protected] newberg.org. Online donations can be made at www.loveincnewberg.org.
