Letter writing project returns for second round

The statewide letter writing project, Dear Stranger, is returning following the first round of correspondence in April.

The project, organized by Oregon Humanities, “aims to connect Oregonians from all walks of life through the mail,” according to a press release from the group.

Similar to a pen-pal program, participants are asked to write a letter and send it to Oregon Humanities. The organization will pair participants from across the state and swap their letters. The group hopes to jumpstart future correspondence as a result.

The prompt for this round is to “write about starting — good starts, bad starts, false starts, late starts. A time you started over, or started something new. A first try, or maybe a second,” the release said.

Participants are asked to send their letters along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and a signed permission form to Oregon Humanities by Sept. 5. Permission forms can be found at www.oregonhumanities. org.

Letters should be addressed to Dear Stranger, 813 S.W. Alder St., Suite 702, Portland, OR 97205.

The Dear Stranger project will occur once more later in the year. The project occurs in conjunction with the publication of Oregon Humanities magazine and letter themes are related to the magazine’s theme.
