SANDY Following in the footsteps of the high school team, the Newberg Middle School wrestling team rolled to a district championship March 6 at Sandy High School.
The Tigers had four champions and collected 494.5 points to run away from host Sandy, which totaled 392.5 to place second, and 14 other teams.
Capturing titles for Newberg against a field of more than 300 wrestlers were Maxwell Irving at 70 pounds, Cody Fettig at 85, Oliver Myers at 95 and Jack Evans at 120. Wayne Barett and Diego Martinez also scored big points for the Tigers, finishing second at 130 and 220 pounds, respectively.
Newberg also had six wrestlers make their way through the consolation ladder to place third, including Ryan Penrose (70), Joey Moody (80), Lane Penrose (90), Ryan Frey (95), Ryan Montigue (148) and Hunter James (157).
Placing fourth at the tournament were Enrique Miller at 130 and Rowan Gallardo at 142, while Mason Henkleman (70), Kiki Gonzales (148), Tristan Osborn (185) and Isaiah Parker (200) all finished fifth.
Johnathan Worthington and Branko Frketich placed sixth at 95 and 136 pounds, respectively, to round out Newbergs medal winners.
Also participating at the tournament under head coach Bryan Baxter and Jeremy Hayden were Gianfranco Alvarez, Clayton Barnes, Braeden Baxter, Forchin Brewer, Alex Cobb, Bryce Croft, Brandon Ferris, Drake Garver, Austin Hayden, Hunter Hayden, Jordan Hodgon, Ricky Huff, Hunter Mathews, Taylen Reid, Bailey Moss, Jesse Waite and Tanner Wyatt.
Every kid contributed, coach Baxter said. Im very proud of the way the kids competed and especially proud of the way that the kids conducted themselves.
