Class 6A boys tennis — Newberg downs Forest Grove and Tigard 6-2 last week

After having its Pacific Conference winning streak snapped at 34 matches, the Newberg boys tennis team has started building a new one.

The Tigers got their first by thrashing Century April 4, then added 6-2 wins over both Forest Grove and Tigard last week.

Vernon and partner Micha Stoltzfus are one of the top duos in the Pacific Conference.

Barry Vernon and Micah Stoltzfus were 6-3, 6-2 winners at No. 1 doubles, with No. 3 pair Matt Staples and Ercoli Cragnale earning the other win 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

It was the No. 2 pairing Matt Freeman and Jacob Pendergraph that caught head coach Dave Brown’s eye in the win over Tigard, winning 6-2, 6-0.

“They were outstanding,” Brown said. “They have a shot at going to state if they can play like that.”

Vernon and Stoltzfus lost a tough match at No. 1 doubles, falling 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, but that was evened out by the 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 by Staples and Cragnale.

Newberg took three of four singles matches, with Aidan Thillman rolling 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 and Braden Milroy prevailing 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 in what Brown called the best tennis Milroy has ever played for Newberg.

Brown also praised Isidro Martinez for solid play in his 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 singles, while Eric Seacrest fell 6-3, 6-4.

The Tigers will travel to face rival McMinnville Friday, hoping to replicate their 8-0 shutout from the opening match of the season March 18.
