Lindell tabbed to head NHS girls bball

Newberg High School athletic director Tim Burke announced Friday the selection of Luke Lindell as the new girls basketball head coach for the Tigers. Lindell, who teaches physical education at Chehalem Valley Middle School in Newberg, takes over after spending the past 10 seasons at Class 1A Perrydale. Lindell succeeds Tamie Woginrich, who retired this spring after seven years. 

Brown to lead NHS boys basketball

Mark Brown, who has served as a varsity assistant and head junior varsity coach for the past two years at Newberg High School, has been hired as the Tigers head boys basketball coach. He replaces former head coach Dave Brown, who was not retained after two years at the helm.

‘School is Out’ public swim on tap June 13

Chehalem Aquatic Center is holding two public swim sessions, one from 1 – 3 p.m. and the other from 7 – 8:30 p.m. June 13. All are welcome (rules require that children 8 years and younger be accompanied in the water by an adult) to enjoy the diving board, basketball, slides, and Tarzan rope swing as well as mats and noodles. Admission is $3 for adults and $2.50 for children, students and senior citizens.

Red Cross lifeguard training in June

This condensed American Red Cross lifeguard training program meets from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday June 16 – 27. It will focus on the job of a lifeguard (minimum age is 15 years) in a swimming pool environment and cover training in victim recognition, surveillance, equipment based rescues, first-aid and CPR/AED. GFU hosting baseball camp June 23-25

All baseball players ages 9 to 18 who want to improve their all-around skills on the diamond are invited to the Bruin Baseball All-Skills Camp June 23-25 at George Fox University. The camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be directed by Bruins’ head coach Marty Hunter. Cost is $135 per participant, including camp insurance that provides secondary coverage. Celebrate July 4th with Tilikum Trail Run

Tilikum Retreat Center will host the Tilikum Trail Run July 4 to raise funds for its Christian summer camp scholarship fun. The cost for those who register by June 20 is $35 for adults and $15 for youth 17 and under, which includes a T-shirt and goody bag. Youth 5 years old and younger are free with one paid adult and must be registered. The fee after June 20 goes up $10 per person. This year’s race includes a 5k competitive race, a 5k fun run and a 1-mile walk. Jogging strollers are welcome, but Tilikum is a non-pet facility. Stay after the race to enjoy Tilikum’s boating, swimming, the Big Swing, Little Zipline and a picnic. Check in for the race opens at 9 a.m., followed by the race at 10 a.m. The event concludes at 1pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Pia earns academic honor

For the third consecutive year, George Fox University men’s cross country and track distance runner Joseph Pia has been named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic all-District VIII men’s track and field/cross country team for Division III as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

A senior from Newberg, Pia earned NCAA all-West Region honors in the 2013 fall cross country campaign as he cruised to a personal-best 25:55.13 in the West Region 8K Championships in Claremont, Calif., finishing 17th overall.  He became the program’s first all-region runner since Cam Eberhart in 2009. In his career, Pia was the Bruins’ first-place finisher 17 times in 21 races.

In track, Pia earned all-Northwest Conference honors by winning the men’s 1,500 meter run at the NWC championships, where he also placed fourth in the 5,000 meter run.   

In the classroom, Pia compiled a grade-point average of 3.98 over eight semesters, graduating in May with a degree in engineering.

Providence offers free sports physicals and heart screenings

Providence Medical Group is offering free sports physicals for players in grades 7-12 from 6 to 9 p.m. July 10 in Room 1003 on the first floor of Providence Newberg Medical Center. No appointments are needed. A sports physical, which is required to participate in interscholastic sports activities in grades 7-12, must be completed before the first day of practice and is valid for two years. Wear a loose T-shirt and shorts. General OSAA forms will be provided; if specific school/club forms are required they must be presented at time of physical. A parent or guardian must be present and sign an authorization form for children under age 15.

GFU to host football camp in July 

In conjunction with the return of football this fall to George Fox University for the first time since 1968, head coach Chris Casey and his staff will hold the first-ever Bruins Individual Football Camp July 29-30. The select camp for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are working toward playing the game on an intercollegiate level, the camp will run from 9 a.m. July 29 until 2:30 p.m. July 30. Overnight housing will be provided. The staff will help develop skills with instruction in offensive and defensive positions and group fundamentals, the “specialties” kicking game, speed and strength development, leadership and success skills. Cost is $125 with a $50 deposit (is non-refundable after July 22) required to hold a spot. The fee includes instruction, a camp T-shirt, overnight housing and all meals during camp. Both the participant and a parent or guardian will be required to sign a camp consent and release form and a registration form.  Forms should be completed and sent before July 22 to: Bruin Football Camp, George Fox University Football, 414 N.
