GFU Auxiliary luncheon set for Friday

The George Fox University Auxiliary will host a luncheon at noon Friday in the university’s Cap and Gown Room. Barry Hubbell will be the guest speaker and will reflect on the history of the school during President Ed Stevens’ tenure in the 1980s and 1990s. Cost is $8.50 at the door and reservations must be made by calling Judy Woolsey at 503-538-7314.

Webb receives scholarship

Haley Webb of Dundee has been named an American Quarter Horse Foundation scholarship recipient. A 2011 Newberg High School grad, Webb has been a member of the Lucky Bucks 4-H Club for nine years and is a volunteer at the Chehalem Mountain Therapy Riding Center. Webb attends Menlo College, where she is a member of Phi-Theta-Kappa and has been named to the dean’s and president’s lists.

District track volunteers needed

The Newberg High School Grad Night committee is looking for volunteers to help run the concessions stand at the Pacific Conference district track meet May 15-16 at NHS. To sign up for the track meet, visit www.mysignup. com/districts.

Local named pageant finalist

Kara Stephenson, 14, has been accepted as a state finalist for the National American Miss Pageant, which will be held May 24 in Portland. Stephenson is seeking sponsors for the pageant, which places an emphasis on gaining self-confidence, learning new skills and good attitudes about competition, and achieving personal goals. Newberg driving school now open

The Newberg Driving School is now signing up students with their driver’s permit for summer courses. Classes are small and highly interactive and may qualify participants for a discount on insurance. Students will participate in a week of driving instruction and complete a take-home packet to receive a certificate of completion. The course is taught by NHS teacher and coach Brandon Ramey. Franco leaving CVMS for Westview

Chehalem Valley Middle School principal Jon Franco announced Friday that he is leaving his position to become principal at Westview High School in Beaverton beginning July 1. In his five years at CVMS, Franco developed a system to improve attendance, implemented the Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports program, introduced proficiency-based grading and worked with Mountain View Principal Wayne Strong to increase collaboration between Newberg’s two middle schools, including aligning school schedules beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.
