NHS Envirothon team will advance to nationals, while high school students named in shoe design competition

Newberg Envirothon team advances to nationals

Newberg FFA sent representatives to the Oregon Envirothon Team Competition last week, placing second overall and first in the FFA Division to qualify for the National FFA Environmental and Natural Resources contest in Indianapolis, Ind., in October. The performance by Kylie Holveck, John McCarthy, Tyler Bostok, Kennedy Rainey and Todd Halleman included a first-place finish in the Environmental Issues Practicum. Newberg's freshman team, comprised of Emma Mabry, Sawyer Huffman, Simon Luedtke, Ryan Harber and Parker Woomer, also placed second in the Beginning Team division. The teams were mentored by horticulture teacher Pete Siderius.

Six Newberg FFA students also made their livestock judging debut last week at the first contest of the 2017 Livestock Judging season May 2 at Linn County Expo Center. The Newberg team of Holveck, Halleman, Cody Cox, Rainey, Alyssa Berry and Kayla Boyd placed 13th overall out of 29 teams, with a high team finish of 10th in sheep and goats and a high individual finish of 36th by Holveck.

Three make dean's list at Seattle Pacific

Three area students were named to the Seattle Pacific University winter quarter dean's list. Dundee's Karissa Courtney, along with Kellen Schwartz and Natalie Teegarden of Newberg, earned the honor by completing at least 12 credits and attaining a 3.50 or higher grade-point average.

NHS finalists named in shoe design competition

A group of Newberg High School students in teacher Tyson Lunden's graphic art design class was selected recently as one of 50 finalists out of nearly 3,000 entries in the Vans Custom Culture Shoe Design Contest. The competition will culminate with five schools earning an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles in June to showcase their designs to a panel of celebrity judges. Finalists will be selected through public voting through Wednesday at www.customculture.vans.com/.

St. Paul FFA plant sale continues

St. Paul FFA will host its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the back side of St. Paul High School, as well as from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Among the items for purchase will be hanging baskets, a variety of bedding plants, succulents, herbs, pepper starts and tomato starts. All proceeds will support the club. NHS Greenhouse plant sale

The Newberg High School Greenhouse's annual plant sale will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in May. In addition to purchasing hanging baskets, premium annuals, perennials, native trees and shrubs, vegetables, herbs, bonsai trees and terra nova specialty plants.
