Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski signed two bills into law Thursday, reinforcing his record of focusing on environmental issues in the state.
One of the bills, the updated Oregon Bottle Bill, expands the current 5-cent bottle deposit to include the now ubiquitous water bottles as a means to increase the recycling rate of such products.
Oregon’s original bottle bill was passed in 1971, the first of its kind in the U.S.
The new deposits go into effect Jan. 1, 2009.
The other bill, House Bill 2626, requires electronics manufacturers to fund free recycling sites for products such as televisions and computers. The bill intends to divert such items from landfills, where they can potentially pollute groundwater with toxic metals.
So water and electronics foin up in price - thanks gov!

Sherman;
Take the blinders off. I'm more than willing to pay a few extra dollars for my next TV set to make sure that when I get rid of the old one, it's going to go somewhere where it won't screw up the water and soil. Secondly, You are aware of how a deposit works. You pay money for something you keep for a period of time then when you give it back you get your money back. In the case of the bottle bill. I'm all for it. It should have been done a long time ago. Granted I don't waste my time taking bottles back to the store. I live in a neighborhood where there are plenty of kids raising funds for one school project or another that are more than willing to do it for me.

Are you aware that the deposit when added up for a family of 4 for a year reached 100 bucks. So if faced with a choice between deposit or not, I don't buy a whole lot. When I make my yearly trip to the store and wade through the governmental slop I get maybe 5 bucks back. But with no deposit I would triple my purchases, as for TV’s and other electronics. The "low recycle fee" will drive new models of these things up a hundred bucks. Which will price electronics out of reach for 1/3rd of the citizens living in Oregon.

Sure sure, complain about the price increase...until you show up at the doctor's office and are diagnosed with some sort of cancer or other health complication that results from toxins in...you name it, water, air, our food even? I guess it's totally worth it, though, to have a nice plasma TV and surround sound system.
