Russell E. Palmer
January 26, 1933 to November 21, 2013 -
Gresham resident, loving father, and husband, Russell Palmer, 80, passed away in his home of natural causes on November 21st.
Russell was born in Los Angeles, California in 1933. While growing up in the Los Angeles area he spent time as a child actor with his siblings, and helping his father with their small farm and ice business. Russell graduated from Alhambra High School in 1950 and joined the Navy where he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After leaving the service, Russell lived in the Los Angeles area until 1969 before moving his family to Beaverton.
Russell then moved to Gresham in 1973 and became a community leader active in the International Rotary, Gresham Little League, and Gresham Chamber of Commerce. As the former Gresham Little League President he developed the field at West Gresham grade school. He also managed the Senior Little League Team to a State Championship in 1976. Russell retired from his position of General Manager at General Telephone (now Verizon) in 1989 after 30 plus productive years.
In retirement Russell remained in the Walters Hill neighborhood and spent time fishing, working part time jobs, and enjoying time with all his friends and neighbors. His loving wife of 50 years, Donna, passed away in 2009.
Russell is survived by daughter Susan Palmer Reid (Pete) of Portland and son Mike Palmer (Alison) and grandson, Ellis of Chicago; sister Barbara; brother-in-laws Bill and Jerry, nieces Sue Carol, Bridget and Erika.
Russell had a private service at Forest Lawn Cemetery on December 6 followed by a wake the next day (Saturday) at his residence from 2-6 PM.
