John Gilbert Lopez
December 29, 1951-January 19, 2014
John passed away on January 19, 2014. He was born on December 29, 1951 to Gil and Carmen Lopez. The family lived in the Alhambra area of Los Angeles until the early 1970s when they moved to Tigard, Oregon.
John grew up in a fun neighborhood with lots of kids.
His siblings and his cousins often gathered on Sundays, at their grandparents house, to play and spend time together. John went to All Saints Catholic Elementary School, Don Bosco Technical Institute and Graduated from Wilson High school in 1969. He attended East Los Angeles Junior College for 2 years before moving to in the Portland area in 1973. After moving to Oregon, John attended Fagans Beauty School in Beaverton. John worked as a hair stylist for 35 years and retired in 2010. The last 25 of those years were spent at Shear Pleasure Hair design in Raleigh Hills.
John was very active. He enjoyed playing racquetball, whitewater rafting, camping listening to classical and country music. He loved animals. Animal Planet was one of his favorite television shows. John also loved plants and flowers and had a vast knowledge of horticulture. He loved potting new plants and working out in the garden. He was very creative and artistic. John also enjoyed singing and was quite good. He sang in the annual Portland Singing Christmas Tree event at the Keller Auditorium for several seasons as well as frequenting to various karaoke establishments.
John was close to his family; he made a point to keep up with many family members. He was a practical jokester and kind and thoughtful to others.
He is survived by parents, Gil and Carmen, siblings; Steve & Yvonne Lopez, Lin Lopez; nieces and nephews Steven Lopez, Candace & Stavos Stefanidis, Cindy & Bob Nyquist; grand nieces and nephews, Jonathan and Brandon Nyquist, Stavie and Isabel Stefanidis; Aunt Josie Sanchez, as well as many cousins.
A Rosary was held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Youngs Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass was held at St. Anthony Church in Tigard on Saturday, January 15, 2014. Interment was held at St. Anthony Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Oregon Humane Society at 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97211.
